چکیده

A simple technique to determine biomass concentration as chemical oxygen demand (COD) was developed as an alternative to the standard volatile suspended solid (VSS) method. The proposed technique for biomass measurement as COD is based on the determination of the biomass COD (COD B ) as the difference between total COD (COD T ) and the soluble COD (COD S ) of the sample. The obtained results show that this technique was quicker and simpler than the traditional VSS method. The validity of the proposed methods was tested with pure cultures of a filamentous micro-organisms (Sphaerotilus natans), a floc-forming bacteria and activated sludges. The method was also used for estimating the conversion factor (f CV ) from VSS to COD units. A modification of the standard VSS technique was also proposed using two membranes in the filtration device; this technique allowed the biomass determination in 1 μm size bacteria cultures that cannot be detected by the standard VSS method because cells are not retained by the 1.5 μm diameter pore glass-fibre filter.

Filamentous sludge bulking control by nano zero-valent iron in activated sludge treatment systems.

Sludge bulking causes loss of biomass in the effluent and deterioration of effluent water quality. This study explored the use of nano zero-valent iron (NZVI with an average particle size of 55 ± 11 nm) for sludge bulking control. In two Modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) activated sludge treatment systems, a single dose of NZVI at the final concentration of 100 mg Fe per L in the mixed liquor red...

Experimental Comparison of Two Modifications of Activated Sludge for Treatment of Furfural-Containing Wastewater

A case study is presented in which two modifications of activated sludge treatment of complex chemical wastewater are experimentally compared: a combination of common activated sludge with powdered activated carbon treatment (PACT), and bioaugmentation of activated sludge treatment (BAST). Industrial wastewater of Pars Oil Refinery that was passed through an oil recovery stage was used to inve...

Rapid Biodegradation of Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) by Pure Bacterial Cultures

Two pure bacterial strains capable of rapid degrading methyl tert–butyl ether (MTBE) were isolated from an industrial wastewater treatment plant, identified and characterized. These strains are able to grow on MTBE as the sole carbon and energy sources and completely mineralize it to the biomass and carbon dioxide. The strains were identified as Bacillus cereus and Klebsiella terrigena. Bot...

Coupled Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR)/Activated Sludge Treatment of Synthetic Wastewater with High Concentration of Sulfate and COD

A synthetic wastewater with high concentration of sulfate and COD was treated in anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) coupled with an activated sludge. The work was accomplished in two phases. In the first phase, the concentration of sulfate was kept constant at 500mg/l, but COD concentration was increased from (3000mg/l to 6000mg/l), consequently, COD and sulfate removal in ABR reached to 80% and 9...

Phytoremediation of Palm Oil Mill Effluent by using Pistia Stratiotes Plant and Algae Spirulina sp for Biomass Production (RESEARCH NOTE)

Producing crude palm oil (CPO) will have side effect on producing palm oil mill effluent (POME).  Besides of high COD /BOD contents, POME still contains high amount of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphor and mineral). Traditional treatment of palm oil mill effluent using facultative anaerobic method not fully eliminated COD and BOD into allowable limit. The objective of this research was to utilize p...
